In 1997, Mercedes-Benz introduced its first luxury mid-size off-roader as a smaller option to the larger G-Class. Mercedes-Benz pioneered the SUV segment, becoming a trendsetter among luxury manufacturers. Now in its fourth generation, the new Mercedes-Benz GLE is stylish, sporty and innovative.
The exterior design exudes presence and power and the interior is even more spacious and comfortable. Superior agility on the road and exceptional performance off the beaten track comes courtesy of the new 4MATIC fully variable all-wheel drive, along with the world’s first 48‑volt active suspension system.
Modern luxury both on and off the road: that is the design ethos of the new GLE. Its robust SUV character is ensured by a chrome-plated underguard, upright radiator grille and bonnet with two prominent powerdomes. This striking appearance is emphasised by distinctive MULTIBEAM LED headlamps. The vehicle's proportions, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs and large wheels, cut a good figure on any terrain.
Inside, the elegant ambience of a Mercedes-Benz luxury saloon and the robust, progressive features of an SUV are captured. The raised centre console creates a contrast with the free-floating appearance of the dashboard. The controls appear to have been milled from a solid metal block with very fine chiselling, showing the desire for perfection and craftsmanship.
The new GLE has a considerably longer wheelbase than before, creating significantly more space, especially for passengers in the rear. The optional folding third row with two extra seats offers even more flexibility.
The GLE continues to innovate, with the latest generation of the multimedia system MBUX - Mercedes-Benz User Experience. The revolutionary system debuts two large 12.3-inch screens as standard, arranged next to each other for an impressive widescreen look. Showcasing elements in an emotively appealing manner underlines the comprehensibility of the intuitive control structure and impresses with brilliant graphics, that can be customized with a choice of four different styles.
MBUX’s learning capabilities provide predictive functions, to anticipate what the user would like next. For instance, anyone who often telephones their friend on Thursday during the drive home, the telephone number is displayed as a suggestion on this day of the week. Other strengths include intelligent voice control with improved natural language comprehension, activated by the phrase "Hey Mercedes".
The ENERGIZING COACH is a new feature, based on an intelligent algorithm that recommends one of the programmes depending on the situation and individual. Various systems in the vehicle are networked for the ENERGIZING comfort control, using musical and lighting moods plus a number of massage modes for a wide range of feel-good programmes. If a Garmin® wearable is worn, personal values measured optimise the accuracy of the recommendation. The aim is for passengers to feel well and relaxed even during long journeys.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC is powered by a six-cylinder engine, electrified with 48-volt technology, delivering 367 hp and 500 Nm of torque. EQ Boost offers an additional 22 hp and 250 Nm of torque over short periods when needed. The integrated starter/alternator (ISG) is responsible for hybrid functions, such as EQ Boost or energy recuperation, enabling fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology.
Numerous safety and assistance systems are available to help the driver. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of bends or junctions. This is complemented by Evasive Steering Assist, a considerably improved Active Lane Keeping Assist and also the additional functions of the Active Emergency Stop Assist.
Even better ride comfort and agility plus completely new functions such as free-driving mode are provided by the optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension, which is combined with the newly developed AIRMATIC air suspension. Free-driving mode is a completely new off-road function: if the GLE becomes bogged down in a sand dune, the system can help to free the vehicle more easily. If possible, the suspension level is automatically raised and lowered several times, to rock itself free.
The latest GLE offers enhanced practicality, refinement and technology features - creating a compelling and highly accomplished SUV, perfect for an active lifestyle, both on and off-road.
